Fred Hollow - Timeline of a Celebrated Eye Doctor

FRED HOLLOW

1929- born in Dunedin
1958-married his first wife
1961-studied ophthalmology at Moorfields eye hospital in England
1965 -move to Australia where he became a professor of Opthalmology
1965- 1992- Hollows was the chair of the Opthalmology division
1980-Fred married his second wife Gabi
1989-Fred was diagnosed with cancer
1992- Travelled to Vietnam with an eye team all prepared to hold an eye surgery workshop.
1992- founded the Fred hollows foundation
1993-Died from Cancer



Turning point:
Growing up he wanted to become a missionary, but after doing some charity work he realised how many people are suffering from eye illnesses due to not having money. He decided to then dedicate his life to helping people with medical eye conditions and enrolled himself into Otago medical school.

Achievement:
Fred hollows travelled over Australia visiting 465 indigenous towns, curing approximately 6000 people.
He established his foundation which trained 7000 eye doctors to perform modern eye surgery. After his death, his foundation went on to open modern intraocular lens factories in Nepal and Eritrea, selling lenses for a low affordable price to help people with cataract blindness.
